Houston ISD’s Milby High School named a Caudill Award Winner – highest honor in TASA/TASB Exhibit of School Architecture
HOUSTON, TEXAS — The Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) and the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) named Houston ISD’s Milby High School a recipient of the Caudill Award, the organizations’ highest honor. The Caudill Class finalists must receive at least four of six Stars of Distinction, and the Kirksey-designed Milby High School earned all six for Design, Value, Sustainability, Community, Planning, and School Transformation. Milby is the only finalist to have been recognized in all six areas.
The Caudill Class honor is named for notable Texas architect, William Wayne Caudill. Caudill is remembered for his progressive ideas and concepts that we still see in school design today. The Caudill Award will be presented in Austin at the 2019 TASA Midwinter Conference on January 28th.
Houston ISD’s Milby High School is a place where past, present, and future meet. The design includes 40,000-sf of renovation to the 1926 historic structure with 240,000 sf of new construction. Each space within and around the building is designed to be flexible and grow with the school. The new design is centered on the spirit, tradition, and history of the school to complement Milby’s rich history and deep roots, but surrounded by a modern, 21st-century learning environment. Preservation and the reuse of original materials work in tandem with modern “neighborhood” layouts, glass walls for increased visibility, and enhanced technology to bring past and future together in one design. The campus incorporates eight Career and Technology Education (CTE) programs that focus on project-based, hands-on, and linked learning.
Natural light is abundant throughout the school to promote wellness and healthy learning environments. The LEED Silver certified building includes many sustainable design strategies that reduce the negative environmental impacts of construction and operation, ensure the health and wellness of students and staff, and introduce a connection to nature.

Milby received four additional design awards in 2018:
- AIA Houston Design Award: Renovation/Restoration
- IIDA TX-OK Design Excellence in Education Research award
- Preservation Houston, Good Brick Award for Historic Preservation
- American School & University Educational Interiors Showcase Crow Island School Citation – top K-12 award. The jury stated the project was “beautifully executed with wonderful use of natural light – a successful integration of old and new that celebrates the existing structure while providing new life and vitality to the spaces.”
