Kirksey Runners Take to the Road for the Texas Independence Relay
With 200 miles to cover in only two short days, the Kirksey Cannons team trekked from Gonzales to Houston --- and all on foot.
The “Kirksey Cannons” team competed again this year in the Texas Independence Relay, a “glorious 200 mile” stretch, starting from Gonzales, Texas, and ending at the San Jacinto Monument in La Porte, Texas, right outside of Houston.
It was the 10th anniversary for the relay, and Kirksey’s fourth year to participate, with 11 runners (8 veterans and 3 rookies).
The team endured heat and humidity on the warmer-than-average weekend of March 25-26, with a total run time of 31 hours and 36 minutes. The relay was broken up into 40 legs, with overnight sprints and cat naps in the fleeting shade. Each Kirksey runner averaged between 18 and 26 miles a piece, and the team traveled by two vans.
It wasn’t all run and no play, though, as they got to tour the Spoetzl Brewery and enjoyed a much-needed Five Guys Burger visit at the end of their journey.
