Kirksey Presents at A4LE National Conference in Chicago

Each year, people from all parts of the education landscape gather during the Association for Learning Environments national conference, LearningSCAPES.

This year, the annual conference took place in Chicago on November 1st - 4th. Experts in facility planning, designers, and suppliers joined educators to connect and learn about innovation and trends in education and learning. Several members of the Kirksey pk-12 team attended the conference and participated in two presentations

Jody Sergi, a Project Manager at Kirksey, and Bill Dwyer, a Project Architect at Kirksey, presented on the topic of historic restorations, titled “Harnessing History: Restoration through Modern Technology and Traditional Techniques.” The pair walked attendees through some of the challenges one might expect from a historic renovation and then outlined the modern tools that can be used to create solutions. The presentation also focused on the value of restoring and learning from historic structures and traditional passive design solutions for a comfortable indoor environment. Jody and Bill used examples from their experience restoring Houston ISD’s Milby High School, one of the city’s oldest schools.

In another Kirksey presentation, Nicola Springer, Executive Vice President at Kirksey and leader of the pK-12 Team, and Project Architect Michael La Nasa discussed the importance of designing schools spaces with furniture in mind. The session was in the format of a workshop and participants took part in a collaborative and playful programming exercise to learn the value of considering the design and layout of furniture early in the process, and strategies for optimizing the spatial experience where educational design is concerned.
