  • 31 OCTOBER 2017 Astrodome Conservancy, Harris County tentatively planning a Dome bash

    A party to honor the Astrodome's history is tentatively set for April 9, 2018. The party itself won't be in the Dome, but fans can wait in line to walk inside for a few minutes. A massive $105 million renovation project that would raise the floor of the Dome two levels and put thousands of parking spaces underneath could begin as early as next summer. Kirksey Architecture is working on the design to retrofit the Astrodome.

    Second Baptist Church - Cypress won a 2017 Solomon design award. Designed by Kirksey Architecture, the growing campus features a technology-rich, state-of-the-art church that includes worship in the round to give all church-goers great views from any angle. The design was inspired by Texas vernacular, incorporating natural limestone and exposed wood.

    Kirksey's Director of EcoServices and LEED Fellow, Julie Hendricks, spoke at a press conference on behalf of AIA Houston hosted by Environment Texas and the Galveston Bay Foundation. The topic was a new report from Environment Texas that ranks Houston fourth out of five Texas cities in storm water management and urges cities to place priority on green infrastructure.

    As summer 2017 drew to a close, for the first time in 166 years of weather records, two Category 4 Atlantic hurricanes hit the United States in the same season—just 16 days apart. “We’ve been preaching sustainability and resiliency for years,” says Catherine Callaway, board president of AIA Houston and senior associate at local firm Kirksey. “Now that there are new ears willing to listen, I think we have a great opportunity to talk about better ways to build and develop land.”

    Pelican Builders begins testing the market today for a condominium building near River Oaks with units priced as high as $2.6 million. The Kirksey-designed building is meant to appeal to downsizing River Oaks residents, the developer said.

    Designed by Kirksey, the new office project in Midland for Houston-based oil and gas exploration firm Apache Corp. has broken ground with Adolfson & Peterson Construction at the helm. The three-story building is adjacent to the company's existing offices, and estimated completion is first quarter of 2018.
