Calhoun Lofts Open at University of Houston

HOUSTON, TX — The new, luxury 984-bed Calhoun Lofts Graduate and Professional Student Housing Complex opened in August for the 2009-2010 school year. A design-build project by Kirksey Architecture and Pepper Lawson Construction, this 4-building complex (7-, 8-, 9- and 10-story buildings) hosts a combination of studio, 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom apartments. Loft features include 10-foot ceilings, kitchens with granite countertops, a stove, refrigerator and microwave (dishwashers in 2-bedroom units), furnished and unfurnished options, universal wi-fi, web-interfaced room thermostats, and exposed concrete ceilings and floors for a modern, urban feel.
In addition to the residential components of the individual units, communal amenities include a fitness center, nine laundry lounges, a special-event kitchen, two classrooms, 15 study lounges, a movie theater, coffee bar, universal wi-fi throughout, meeting spaces, a private courtyard, ground floor retail space (with a mini market, dry cleaners, and Barnes & Noble bookstore), a sky lounge, and two roof-top terraces with views across the campus and city.

The Calhoun Lofts project reflects the growing trend of luxury, high-amenity student housing facilities appearing on college campuses across the U.S., as universities realize their potential as recruiting tools that provide a competitive advantage over campuses with more traditional, utilitarian housing facilities. Located along Calhoun Road in the northeast corner of the University of Houston campus, the Lofts complex was designed to meet the growing demand for on-campus housing of single and married graduate and professional students. There is currently a waiting list for the 2010-2011 term.
