Kirksey Architecture announced as a winner in the 2020 ALA/IIDA Library Interior Design Awards

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HOUSTON, TEXAS — Kirksey Architecture is pleased to announce that it has been named a winner in this year’s ALA/IIDA Library Interior Design Awards for Milby High School’s Library Renovation. This biennial competition honors excellence in library interior design and promotes examples of extraordinary design reflected through innovative concepts.

“When libraries are designed in novel and accessible ways, they become vital parts of their communities,” said IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA. “It’s an honor to be celebrating nine deserving projects that demonstrate the power of design within these essential spaces.”
Entries were reviewed by a committee of interior design and library professionals: Gregory Mickells, library director, Madison Public Library; Bob Pasicznyuk, executive library director, Douglas County Libraries; Joseph A. Rondinelli, principal, DesignThink Consulting; Margaret Sullivan, principal, Margaret Sullivan Studio.
“We were all impressed with the breadth and depth of the national and international submissions,” said Rondinelli on behalf of the jury. “The winning projects embraced the needs of their communities with delight and are the best examples of outstanding design. They will continue to serve their communities and become valued symbols of excellence for years to come.”

Milby High School’s Library is being honored in the Outstanding Historic Renovation category. Designed by Kirksey Architecture, the renovation of Milby High School brings 21st century learning and sustainable design strategies to a historically significant school, originally built in 1926. Kirksey worked with Houston IS and preserved the 40,000-sf original building as the heart of the school, which was re- purposed as the learning commons with a library to bring students together.

All winners will be featured on iida.org and published in Contract and American Libraries. The Best of Competition winner will be announced on July 24 via Facebook Live.
