In 1999, SBISD voted to provide full day pre-K classes for all four-year olds in its district, becoming the first district in the state with such a program. Kirksey worked with SBISD, studying the feasibility of 47 sites, eventually selecting four optimal locations, and developed a “prototype” design from which all four campuses were based. Each 25,000-sf building accommodates 400 children within 18 classrooms that open onto a secured 18,000-sf courtyard. This outdoor area, the highlight of the building, features a 7,000-sf playground, butterfly garden, vegetable garden, nature trail, and other interactive outdoor activity areas.
