This single-story, 20,000-sf green building was the first LEED® Certified commercial building in Houston, Texas. For the SpawGlass corporate offices to qualify for LEED® certification, our project team used local materials, constructed a white roof for reflectivity, used natural light effectively to reduce energy costs, and used low-E glass to reduce heat gain, glare, and energy loss. Kirksey made minor adaptations to conventional design methods to accomplish the finished project — the result of which was a straightforward, cost-effective, and energy-efficient design. A fast-track construction process allowed occupancy by January 2003, six months after breaking ground.
