Houston might have the sad reputation of demolishing more buildings than saving them, but Kirksey’s PK-12 Education Team had the rare opportunity to turn that notion on its head with the restoration of one of Houston’s oldest high schools.

Three of Kirksey's PK-12 Education Team members will speak at the Association for Learning Environments (A4LE) Southern Regional Conference.
  • Nicola Springer, AIA, LEED AP
  • Jody Henry, AIA, LEED AP
  • Bill Dwyer, AIA
The presentation will talk about how their renovation and restoration of Houston ISD’s Milby High School presented challenges (the original building was built in 1926), but allowed for more creativity when it came to utilizing the latest cutting-edge technologies without sacrificing traditional building techniques.

Their presentation, Harnessing History: Restoration through Modern Technology and Traditional Techniques, will feature a myriad of tools of design and the merging of a century’s worth of construction techniques. From hand drawings to energy models and CFD simulations, the Kirksey team will peel back the layers of architecture in Houston and what it means for great school design.

Milby High School's historic 1926 building structure, dubbed the "heart of the school." The architecture team restored this beloved structure and designed new construction around it, in order to keep it the center piece of the campus.

New construction at Milby to help continue with 21st century learning opportunities. The Kirksey PK-12 Education Team removed the east side of the 1926 building that contained the original gymnasium and installed a curtainwall. The building will now be the Student Union, which will house the cafeteria and dining commons, library and additional programmed spaces.
