2019 Gulf Coast Green

The 2019 Gulf Coast Green Conference and Expo continued its tradition of education and innovation.

The all-day sustainability conference & green product expo was held on May 17th at the Rice University Moody Center for the Arts. This year’s conference theme, “CROSSROADS: Inclusive Exchange,” brought attendees together to learn and discuss how the community can be engaged in both design and construction, and how that relationship can promote professional and personal relationships. Topics covered technical presentations on infrastructure and systems, and discussions on placemaking, compassionate design, social justice, and the public realm.

Kirksey’s long history of support continued this year with several leadership roles and volunteers. Katherine Ruiz, an expert on Sustainable Design and member of Kirksey’s EcoServices team, was this year’s Conference Chair, and the youngest in the history of the conference! Jody Sergi and Julie Hendricks also acted as Vice Chair & Expo Chair, and Speaker Co-Chair, respectively. The firm’s dedication to the event and the advancement of sustainable principles and practices in Houston dates back to 2005 when Brian Malarkey, Kirksey’s Interiors team leader, founded the conference. Since then, five Kirksey employees have served as Conference Chairs, and many more have volunteered in a variety of capacities to manage the conference.

Colley Hodges, one of our resident Sustainability experts, presented with Roshani Malla of University of Houston-Downtown, and Michael Mendoza of the University of Houston, on actual lessons learned from implementing sustainable practices at multiple scales and in differing environments on university campuses.
